Yoga and Meditation

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline achieved by controlled body positions with the combination of systematic breathing techniques. The goal of yoga is the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight, tranquillity and a sound body with all its functions intact. Yoga has also been studied as a treatment for many ailments especially for schizophrenia. It is found to improve cognitive functions and reduce stress in schizophrenia, a condition associated with cognitive deficits and stress related relapse. In studies, at the end of 4 months those patients treated with yoga were better in their social, occupational functions and quality of life. In other studies, the effects of yoga on heart disease suggest that yoga may reduce high blood pressure, improve symptoms of heart failure, enhance cardiac rehabilitation and lower cardiovascular risk factors.
