“Life of Pi”, the Oscar winning movie directed by ‘Ang Lee’ based on the Booker Prize winning novel on the same name by ‘Yann Martel’ was shot in Munnar for a small schedule. The movie told story about the survival and faith of Pi, the son of a zoo keeper performed by Suraj Sharma. The adult age of Pi was performed by Irfan Khan. The casting included mainly Indian actors. The movie released in 2012 and was a global blockbuster hit. The beauty of hill stations and tea gardens were well captured in this film. The most memorable scene of Munnar in this film is when Pi visiting a church, being curious about all religions. He realizes that all religions stands for same cause and all have equal values.
Munnar became crowded when the King Khan of Bollywood ‘Shahrukh Khan’ came here for the shooting of “Chennai Express”. The movie directed by ‘Rohit Shetti’ was released in August 2013 and was a huge box office hit. Movie was shot at Devikulam Lake, Meesapulimala, Wagavara and Kannimala during April 2013. The shooting was scheduled for 10 days but it was extended due to heavy rainfall. The beauty queen of Bollywood ‘Deepika Padukone’ did the heroine role in this film.
“Nishabd”, a Bollywood film directed by ‘Ram Gopal Varma’ starring ‘Amithabh Bachchan’ and ‘Jiah Khan’ was shot in Munnar. The shooting progressed for 20 days. The movie was released in 2007 and received mixed reviews from critics.
“Ayalum Njanum Thammil” is a Malayalam film directed by ‘Laljose’ in which ‘Prithviraj Sukumaran’ and ‘Prathap Pothen’ played the lead roles. Major portion of the film was shot at Munnar. The story was about the relationship of a committed senior doctor and an irresponsible junior doctor. The film won 4 Kerala State film Awards. It was the last silver screen appearance of ‘Samvritha Sunil’ as for now.
Santosh Sivan’s English films ‘Road to Sky’ and ‘Before the Rains’ was shot at Munnar. He captured the seasonal transmission and its charm at Munnar in his films.
The major Tamil films shot at Munnar are Maina, Kumki, Munnar and Vanakkam Chennai.
‘Lenin Rajendran’ shot one schedule of his film “Edavapathi” starring ‘Manisha Koirala’ at Munnar on 2012. The movie is not yet released. Still Munnar invites film makers with its uncompromising beauty.
