Let us make a glance through the traditional costume for women in Kerala. The garment worn by Kerala women is Mundum Neriyathum. Mundu is the lower garment worn around the hips. Mundu is usually made of cotton and is hand woven. Most usually Mundu is of white and cream colour. Neriyathu is the upper garment and is put over the blouse. Set saree is another traditional cloth worn by women in Kerala. It is the single piece cloth that resembles the traditional Mundum Neriyathum. Pattu paavada is the traditional dress worn by young girls in Kerala.
Now let us see the traditional costumes of men in Kerala. The most used garment is Mundu which is the lower garment worn on all days irrespective of occasions. It is a long cloth usually of white or cream colour. In olden days men used to wear no upper garments but higher caste people used to drape a cloth over their shoulders. Nowadays men in Kerala use to wear shirt, jubbah etc. as upper garments. Men wear Lungi as the informal dress and are most common in Kerala. Muslim men use to wear a cap. The traditional costumes of Christian women in Kerala are Chattayum Mundum. Chatta is a full or half sleeved blouse in white colour. This blouse that reaches the waist is worn with a Mundu. This traditional Christian dress for women is still used by middle aged people.
Kerala has got a luxurious tradition in ornament. The designs of traditional ornaments have got a huge influence in the modern designs in ornaments worn by Kerala women. The most famous golden ornaments in Kerala are Kasu Mala, Palakka and Jimikky. Gold is the first preference for every generation at here. Nagapada Tali, Karimani Mala, Manga Mala, Addiyal, Mullamottu Mala, Poothali etc. are some of the traditional golden ornaments that has got demand in present days too. Along with gold, silver is also used for the traditional ornaments in Kerala. Golden bangles, Kolusu, Aranjanam are other ornaments worn by Kerala women. Kolusu is worn at the lower leg near foot and Aranjanam is tied around the waist. Kerala women in traditional costume usually wear a bunch of jasmine flowers on their hair and Sindooram in their forehead.
