Christianity is the religion about compassion and it is the 3rd most practised religion in Kerala. Christian missionaries influenced Kerala culture in a large depth. They constructed many educational institutions, orphanages and performed many social activities. Along with this they have constructed many Churches in different parts of Kerala. Geographically, Kerala includes 14 districts and a portion of Pondicherry union territory called Mahe. Many churches stand in these places as a memoir of colonial period in Kerala. Santa Cruz Basilica in fort Cochin is an ancient church famous all over the world. It was built about five hundred years ago and is a Roman Catholic Church. It was destroyed by British in 1795. Years after, in 1887 it was reconstructed. This Church was proclaimed at Basilica by Pop John Paul II in 1984. This Church is a real architectural wonder.

 

 

Malayattur Church in Ernakulam district is the most famous Christian church in Kerala. it is at a distance of fifty two kilometres from Cochin and is located on the Malayattur Hill. This church is dedicated to St. Thomas and it is believed to that St. Thomas himself built this church. This Christian pilgrim centre is also an attraction for travellers reaching Cochin. The building reflects Greco-Roman architectural style. Visuals of the Periyar River and the Western Ghats give this place a fabulous charm. There is a statue of St.Thomas at here and his foot prints are engraved on a rock. A huge number of Christian pilgrims from all corner of the world visit this church to see these sacred things.

 

St. Francis Church is another famous Church in fort Cochin and is the first church in India to be built in European style. The tomb of Vasco da Gama inside the Church make this place attracted to the travellers reach in Cochin. This church has got a unique place in the history of India. St. Mary’s Forance Church is an ancient church located in Kottayam district. Many tourists visit this church to see the Persian crosses sculptures and mural paintings in the church. This is a world renowned church and many pilgrims visit this church every year.

Madre De Deus Church which is also known as Vettukaud Church is located in Trivandrum district. The church holds a tradition of more than five hundred years. This church is famous all over the India for the Feast of Christ the King celebration. The celebration lasts for ten days and a grand Feast is there on the last day.
