Pampadum Shola National Park is the smallest national park in Kerala. The park is under the Munnar wildlife division and it holds a unique charm and mysterious atmosphere to invite the travelers. The name of the park in local language means ‘a forest where snakes dances’. This evergreen forest area is rich in many varieties of reptiles. You can see elephants, Nilgiri Langurs, Leopards, and Indian Wild Dogs etc. in these areas. The Kodaikanal – Munnar road is closed to provide safe habitat for these wild animals. The major attraction of this park is the presence of Tigers. The park has got its significance in these days when a rapid decrease in the population of Tigers is observed in India. Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Nilgiri Marten etc. are the exclusive attraction of this park.
Other birds that you can see in the park are White-bellied Shortwing, Vernal Hanging Parrot, Blue Rock-thrush, Blue-capped Rock-thrush and Nilgiri flycatcher, and Black and orange Flycatchers. The park is rich in many herbs having medicinal values. There are 22 species of trees and 74 species of herbs and shrubs found in this park. A variety of Eucalyptus is wide grown in this area and is a threat to the ecology due its dehydrating character. The park soil is rich in humus. The climate in the park is misty and cloudy throughout the year. The park is open to the tourists with payment. You can reach the park from Munnar trough the road to Vattavada. It is at a distance of 35 km from Munnar. The best time to visit here is from April to September. The other attraction of this park is the presence of 100 varieties of beautiful butterflies. You can stay in log houses at Kuttikadu and Neduvarpu.
